The History of Craps Game
The game of Craps, like so many other exciting games, is the product of an evolutionary process. Historians differ on the theory of where Craps got its start. Some say that dice games were first played by the Roman Legions during the Holy Roman Empire. These dice were carved from pigs' knuckles. Other evidence of early dice games includes a cube that dates back to 600BC Egypt.
A game called Hazard appeared in the Middle Ages, first in the Arab world, then spreading west across Europe into France and England around 1500 AD. This game used two six-sided cubes with individually numbered sides. In this game, the "Hazard banker" set the stake and the player picked a number between 5 and 9 and then tried to roll it. The lowest value (two, or 1 and 1) was called "crabs". The game came to North America with the first French and English colonists. The French name for the game became "crabs", which evolved into the universal name "Craps".
The modern craps game is less than 200 years old. Bernard de Manderville devised a simplified game of craps in 1813 in Louisiana. The craps game became popular in America during the 1830's. It wasn't until 1865 that John H. Winn introduced the "don't pass" bet rules to the craps game that allowed players to bet against the "shooter" (a.k.a. the dice roller) rather than just with the shooter. Until this time, players could only bet with the shooter. This innovation increased the fairness of the game by reducing the effectiveness of "fixed dice" (dice which have been physically tampered with to adjust the expected outcomes).
There are two versions of Craps: Street Craps and Bank Craps. Playing street
craps involves two players betting against each other on the rolls, such that
there's a pot to be one. Bank craps involves there being a "bank"
to cover all player bets (i.e. the "house" or casino).
The basic rules and explanation of the Craps Game
Craps is played on a special table with two dice. Players can bet on the outcome of the numbers thrown. The player throwing the dice is called the "shooter". Other players bet on the number to be thrown by the shooter by placing chips in designated areas on the table. Whether or not the player wins depends on the numbers thrown by the shooter. While the table is complicated as there are several different types of bets to make, you don't have to know all of them to have fun.
When the shooter starts the game, the initial throw is called the "come
out" throw.
If the come out roll totals 7 or 11 he immediately wins. This is known as a
natural.
If the total is 2, 3 or 12 he immediately loses. This is known as craps.
Any other total thrown (4,5,6,8,9,10) is known as the player's point, in which
case the shooter continues to throw the dice until either his point or a 7 is
thrown.
If he throws his point first he wins, and the dice are said to "pass".
This is also known as making the point. If he throws a 7 first he loses. This
is known as a seven out and the dice are said to "miss".
If you place your chips on the Pass Line before the come out roll you win with
either a 7 or 11 on the come out throw or if the shooter makes his point. The
house edge against you on this bet is about 1.41%. Not bad odds in a casino.
The Pass bet is the most popular craps bet. It is a simple bet to make and allows
you to become a part of the game.
You also have the option to bet against rather than with the shooter. The Don't
Pass betting space allows for this and the house edge is about 1.4%
Note that the Don't Pass bet bars 6-6 as betting against the shooter would give
a player the edge. Recall that the odds of winning are calculated to be slightly
against the shooter. Bar 6-6 means that should the shooter throw a 6-6 the Don't
Pass bet is undecided. It neither wins nor loses and the player who made the
bet may withdraw it or leave it to be decided by subsequent throws. Some tables
bar 1-1 instead. Some of the more aggressive casinos bar a 1-2, which really
puts the odds in favour of the house as there are two ways to make this total
(1-2 and 2-1). Barring gives the casino the edge on Don't Pass/Don't Come bets.
Once a natural, craps, a seven, or the point is thrown a new round begins with
a new come out throw. The shooter will remain the same unless the shooter had
a "seven out".
Additional betting options are available to players during a shooter's turn.
Bets can be placed on the table at any time before the shooter has a "seven
out". Some players develop a perception of how the dice are performing
- hot or cold - and adjust betting patterns to match. If the dice are cold,
betting against the shooter may be an attractive option.
